Hadith 999
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a funeral of a person who was in debt was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would ask: "Has he left behind enough wealth to cover his debt?" If the people said that yes, he has left enough, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would offer the prayer; and if not, he would say to the people: "You pray over your companion." Then, when Allah Almighty opened the doors of conquest for him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "I am closer to the believers than their own selves (this is such extreme love that he became more their friend than they themselves). Now, whoever dies in debt, its payment is my responsibility, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his heirs."
