Hadith 637
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed i'tikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan, during which he used to seek Laylat al-Qadr before its knowledge was given to him. When the middle ten days passed, he (peace be upon him) ordered the tent to be taken down, so it was taken down. Then it was made known to him that it (Laylat al-Qadr) is in the last ten days, so he (peace be upon him) ordered the tent to be set up again, so it was set up again. Then he (peace be upon him) came to the companions and said: O people! The knowledge of Laylat al-Qadr was given to me, and I came out to inform you, but two men came arguing, with whom was Satan, so (its exact determination) was made to be forgotten by me. Now seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan; seek it on the ninth, seventh, and fifth nights (from the end). The narrator says: I said to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), you know better than us about these numbers. He said: Yes! We are more entitled to know about it than you. The narrator says: I said, which nights are meant by the ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: When the twenty-first night passes, after which comes the twenty-second night, that is what is meant by the ninth. And when the twenty-third passes, the one after it is meant by the seventh. And when the twenty-fifth night passes, the one after it is meant by the fifth.
