Hadith 578
Kuraib reports that Lady Umm Fadl bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) sent him to (the land of) Syria to Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: I went to Syria and completed his task, and I saw the crescent of Ramadan on the night of Friday (i.e., Thursday evening). Then, at the end of the month, I came to Madinah. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked me and mentioned the crescent, asking: When did you see it? I said: On the night of Friday. He asked: Did you see it yourself? I said: Yes, and the people also saw it and fasted, and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people also fasted. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: But we saw it on the night of Saturday, so we will complete thirty fasts or (stop when) we see the crescent. So I said: Is the sighting of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his fasting not sufficient for you? He said: No, this is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us. And Yahya bin Yahya is in doubt whether the word in the hadith is "naktafi" or "taktafi".
