Hadith 534
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: A man heard a voice in a cloud in the open field saying, “Water the garden of so-and-so.” (After this voice) the cloud moved to one side and rained water on a rocky land. One of the channels among its channels became completely full. So that man followed the water as it flowed, and suddenly he saw a man standing in his garden, diverting the water here and there with his spade. He said to the owner of the garden, “O servant of Allah! What is your name?” He replied, “So-and-so,” the same name that was heard in the cloud. Then the garden owner said to this man, “O servant of Allah! Why did you ask my name?” He replied, “I heard a voice in the cloud, someone was saying, ‘Water the garden of so-and-so,’ and he mentioned your name. So, what gratitude do you show for Allah’s favor in this garden?” The garden owner said, “Since you have said this, now I will tell you. I see whatever income comes from this garden, I give one third of it in charity, one third my wife and children eat, and one third I spend on the garden.” (From this hadith, it is understood that spending one third of wealth in the way of Allah is better, and it is also known that angels, by the command of Allah Almighty, cause rain to fall—at one place more, at another less.) In another narration, it is stated: “I spend one third on the poor, the beggars, and the travelers.”
