Hadith 461
Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: When any servant is afflicted with a calamity and he recites this supplication: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un... Allahumma’jurni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha” — that is, “Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed, to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me for my affliction and grant me something better than it in exchange.” (By reciting this supplication) Allah Almighty grants him reward for that calamity and gives him something better than what was lost. Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When (my first husband, Sayyiduna) Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, I recited (the mentioned supplication) as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed me, so (by the blessing of this supplication) Allah Almighty granted me a better husband (that is, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) than my previous husband.
