Hadith 454
‘Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever does not wish to meet Allah, Allah does not wish to meet him. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! All of us dislike death.” So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That is not what I meant. Rather, when the believer’s final moment comes, he is given the glad tidings of Allah’s mercy, His pleasure, and Paradise, so he wishes to meet Allah (and desires to be quickly freed from illness and the distresses of the world), and Allah also wishes to meet him. And when the disbeliever’s final moment comes, he is informed of Allah’s punishment and His anger, so he does not wish to meet Allah, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not wish to meet him.
In another narration, it is narrated from Shuraih bin Hani that Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah also dislikes to meet him. After hearing this hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), I went to Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), and said, “O Mother of the Believers! Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that if it is correct, then we are all doomed.” She said, “Whoever is destroyed by the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he is truly destroyed. Tell me, what is that (hadith)?” I said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever does not wish to meet Allah, Allah does not wish to meet him. And there is none among us who does not dislike death.” Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this, but it does not mean what you think. Rather, when the eyes turn (upwards), and the soul is held in the chest, and the hair stands on end on the body, and the fingers become contracted (i.e., in the state of death), then at that time, whoever wishes to meet Allah, Allah also wishes to meet him, and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah also dislikes to meet him.
