Hadith 445
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for prayer and stood for a very long time. Then he bowed (ruku’) and performed a very long bowing. Then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but less than the first standing. Then he bowed and performed a long bowing, but less than the first bowing. Then he prostrated (sajdah). (There were two bowings in one rak’ah, and this is also the view of Imam Shafi’i, may Allah have mercy on him.) Then he stood up and stood for a long time, but less than the previous standing. Then he bowed and performed a long bowing, but less than the previous bowing. Then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but less than the previous standing. Then he bowed and performed a long bowing, but less than the previous bowing. (There were also two bowings here.) Then he prostrated and finished, and by that time the sun had become clear. Then he delivered a sermon to the people, praised and glorified Allah, and said: “The sun and the moon are among the signs of Allah, and they do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life. So when you see an eclipse, glorify Allah, supplicate to Him, pray, and give charity. O Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! There is no one more possessive than Allah regarding His servant or maidservant committing adultery. O Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah! If you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh little. Listen! Have I not conveyed the command of Allah?”
