Hadith 411
´Sayyiduna Abu Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us, and it was very brief and extremely eloquent. Then when he descended from the pulpit, we said, "O Abu al-Yaqzan! You delivered a very eloquent and extremely brief sermon. If you had made this sermon a bit longer, it would have been better." Then Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: A man's prolonging of the prayer and shortening of the sermon is a sign of his understanding, so make the prayer long and the sermon short. And some speech is (as effective as) magic (i.e., it has an effect)."
