Hadith 409
Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Dhamad (this is the name of a person) came to Makkah and he was from the tribe of Azd Shanwah, and he used to perform ruqyah (spiritual healing) for those afflicted by jinn and evil spirits. He heard from the ignorant people of Makkah that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (God forbid) is possessed. So he said, "I will see this person, perhaps Allah will cure him at my hands." Thus, he met the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I perform ruqyah for the effects of jinn and such, and Allah grants healing to whom He wills at my hands. Do you wish for this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied, "All praise is due to Allah, I praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. Now, after the praise, say what you wish." Dhamad said, "Recite these words again." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited these words three times. Then Dhamad said, "I have heard the words of soothsayers, I have heard the sayings of magicians, I have heard the poetry of poets, but I have never heard anything equal to these words, and these have reached the depths of eloquence." Then Dhamad said, "Give me your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to Islam." So he pledged allegiance. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Shall I take the pledge from you on behalf of your people as well?" He replied, "Yes, I pledge allegiance on behalf of my people as well." (The narrator says) Eventually, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a military detachment, and they passed by the people of Dhamad. The leader of that army said, "Have you taken anything from this tribe?" Then a man said, "Yes, I have taken a water vessel from them." He ordered, "Go and return it, for this is the tribe of Dhamad (and they are under protection due to Dhamad's pledge)."
