Hadith 262
´Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says that` I offered prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) facing Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen months, until this verse was revealed in Surah al-Baqarah: “Wherever you are, turn your faces towards the Ka‘bah” (al-Baqarah: 144). So this verse was revealed when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had already performed the prayer. One of his companions heard this and went out; on the way, he found some people from the Ansar (as usual) praying facing Bayt al-Maqdis, so he narrated this hadith to them (that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had been commanded to face the Ka‘bah). Upon hearing this, those people turned themselves towards the Ka‘bah during their prayer.
