Hadith 166
Shaqiq says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) and Sayyiduna Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with them both. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman" (this is the kunyah of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with them both), "if a person is in a state of janabah and does not find water for a month, what should he do about prayer?" Sayyiduna Abdullah said, "Even if he does not find water for a month, he should not perform tayammum." Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Then what is the ruling about the verse in Surah Al-Ma'idah: 'If you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth'?" Sayyiduna Abdullah said, "If by this verse they are allowed to perform tayammum in the state of janabah, then gradually, they will start performing tayammum even when water is cold." Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Have you not heard the hadith of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on an errand, and there I became junub and did not find water, so I lay down in the dust as an animal does. After that, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do like this with both your hands.' Then he struck the earth once with both hands and struck the left hand on the right hand, then wiped the back of the hands and the face." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You know that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not satisfied with the hadith of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)." (Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, were of the opinion that tayammum is not sufficient for janabah. But it is proven from ahadith that they later retracted this view.)
