Hadith 165
Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her): We set out on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When we reached al-Bayda or Dhat al-Jaysh (al-Bayda and Dhat al-Jaysh are names of places between Khaybar and Madinah), my necklace broke and fell off. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stayed to look for it, and the people also stayed. There was no water there, nor did the people have any water with them. The people came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Do you not see what Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) has done? She has held up the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the people, where there is no water and the people have no water.” Hearing this, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had laid his head on my thigh and was sleeping. He said, “You have held up the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the people, where there is no water and the people have no water.” He became angry and said what Allah willed, and began poking me in my side with his hand. I would have moved, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had his head on my thigh, so I did not move. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) slept until morning came and there was absolutely no water. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed the verse of tayammum, so everyone performed tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the leaders, said, “O family of Abu Bakr! This is not the first blessing that has come to you (meaning, Allah has always given benefit to the Muslims because of you, and this too is a blessing received through you).” Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Then we made the camel on which I was riding stand up, and the necklace was found underneath it.
