Hadith 101
‘Sayyiduna Husayn bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was with Sayyiduna Sa’id bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Who among you saw that star which fell last night? I said: I saw it, but I was not engaged in prayer (the purpose of saying this is so that no one thinks of me as a worshipper or one who stays awake at night), rather, a scorpion stung me (so I could not sleep and saw the star fall). Sayyiduna Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then what did you do? I said: I had ruqyah (incantation) done. He said: Why did you have ruqyah done? I said: Because of the hadith that Shu’bi narrated to us. He said: Which hadith did Shu’bi narrate? I said: He narrated to us the hadith of Sayyiduna Buraydah bin Husayb Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Ruqyah is of no benefit except for the evil eye or a sting (i.e., it is beneficial to remove the effect of the evil eye or for the sting of a scorpion or snake, etc.). Sayyiduna Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever heard and acted upon it did well, but Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to us a hadith. He heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who used to say: The nations of the prophets were presented before me. Some prophets had less than ten followers, some prophets had with them only one or two men, and some had none with them. Then a large group appeared. I thought this was my nation. I was told: This is Musa (peace be upon him) and his nation. Look at the edge of the sky. I looked and saw another large group. Then I was told: Now look at the other edge. I looked and saw another large group. I was told: This is your nation, and among them are seventy thousand people who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and went to his house. The people began to discuss those who would enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. Some said: Perhaps they are those who kept the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Some said: No, perhaps they are those who were born in the state of Islam and never associated anyone with Allah. Some said something else. Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said: What are you discussing? They informed him, so he said: They are those who do not perform ruqyah, nor do they ask for ruqyah, nor do they seek omens, and they put their trust in their Lord. Upon hearing this, ‘Ukasha bin Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me among them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are among them. Then another man stood up and said: Pray for me too, that Allah makes me among them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Ukasha has preceded you in this matter.
