Hadith 64
'Abdur Rahman bin Shumasah al-Mahri says: We went to Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was near death at that time. He (Sayyiduna Amr, may Allah be pleased with him) wept for a long time and turned his face towards the wall. Then his sons began to say, "O our father! Why are you weeping? Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not give you this glad tidings, did he not give you this glad tidings?" Then he turned his face towards them and said, "Of all things, we consider it best to testify that there is no true deity except Allah and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His Messenger. Three states have passed over me. One state was that I saw myself as not considering anyone worse than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I wished that somehow I could gain power and (God forbid) kill him. Then, if I had died in that state, I would have been among the people of Hell. The second state was that Allah placed the love of Islam in my heart, and I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, 'Extend your right hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you (upon Islam).' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his hand, but at that moment I withdrew my hand. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'O Amr! What happened to you?' I said, 'I want to make a condition.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'What condition?' I said, 'The condition that all my previous sins will be forgiven.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'O Amr! Do you not know that Islam wipes out all previous sins, and likewise, migration wipes out all previous sins, and likewise, Hajj wipes out all previous sins?' After that, there was no one I loved more than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor did anyone have a higher status in my eyes than him, and due to his awe, I could not look at him fully. And if anyone were to ask me about his appearance, I could not describe it, because I could not look at him fully. And if I had died in that state, I would have hoped to be among the people of Paradise. After that, we became entangled in some other matters. I do not know what will become of me because of them. So when I die, let there be no wailing woman with my funeral, nor any fire, and when you bury me, cover me well with earth, and stand around my grave for as long as it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that my heart may find comfort with you (and I may not feel lonely in solitude), and I may see what answer I give to the agents (angels) of my Lord."
