Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when this verse was revealed: "And warn your closest relatives" (Ash-Shu'ara: 214), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the people of Quraysh. When they all gathered, he (first) warned everyone in general and then specifically (i.e., by naming those people), and said: O sons of Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy! Save yourselves from the Fire. O sons of Murrah ibn Ka'b! Save yourselves from the Fire. O sons of Abd Shams! Save yourselves from the Fire. O sons of Hashim! Save yourselves from the Fire. O sons of Abdul Muttalib! Save yourselves from the Fire. O Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her)! Save yourself from the Fire, for I have no power before Allah (i.e., if He wishes to punish, I cannot save you). However, the ties of kinship you have with me, I will continue to maintain them (i.e., I will continue to do good to you in this world).
