Zaid bin Abi Anisah says: Abu Al-Waleed Makki narrated to us from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was sitting with Ata bin Abi Rabah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the sale of Muhaqalah and Mukhabarah, and also forbade buying date-palm trees until their fruit becomes red or yellow or fit for eating. And Muhaqalah is when a standing crop is sold in exchange for a specified amount of grain. And Muzabanah is when the fruit of a date-palm tree is sold in exchange for a certain weight of dried dates. And Mukhabarah is when land is given for cultivation in exchange for a third or a quarter of the produce, or something similar (which in our country is called Bataai). Zaid said: I asked Ata bin Abi Rabah, "Did you hear this hadith from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), that he narrated it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said, "Yes."
