‘Mother of the Believers, Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that Barirah came to me and said, “My masters have agreed to contract me for nine uqiyah, one uqiyah per year. So help me.” I said, “If your masters are willing, I will pay the whole amount at once and set you free, but the right of wala’ (allegiance) will be mine.” Lady Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned this to her masters, but they refused and said, “The wala’ will be ours.” Then Barirah came to me and told me this, so I scolded her. She said, “By Allah, this will not happen.” Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard about this and asked me, so when I explained the whole situation, he said, “Buy her and set her free, and let the condition of wala’ be for them, for the wala’ is for the one who sets free.” So I did so. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a sermon in the evening, praised Allah as He deserves, and then said, “What is the matter with people who stipulate conditions that are not in the Book of Allah? Any condition that is not in the Book of Allah is invalid, even if it is stipulated a hundred times. The Book of Allah is more deserving, and Allah’s condition is stronger. Some of you say to others, ‘Set (the slave or slave-girl) free and the wala’ will be ours,’ even though the wala’ is only for the one who sets free.”
