‘Ata says: We attended the funeral of Umm al-Mu’minin Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) at Sarf with Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Be mindful that she is the purified wife of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When you lift her blessed bier, do not shake or jostle it, and carry it with great gentleness. And that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had nine purified wives, of whom eight had an assigned turn and one did not. ‘Ata said: The one for whom there was no assigned turn was Umm al-Mu’minin Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). (This is the narrator’s error; the correct view is that Umm al-Mu’minin Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) gifted her turn to Umm al-Mu’minin ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), as mentioned in the narration above.)
