It is narrated from A’mash who says: I heard Hajjaj bin Yusuf saying in a sermon: Keep the same order of the Noble Qur’an as was set by Jibreel (peace be upon him). The surah in which Baqarah is mentioned should come first, then the surah in which Nisa is mentioned, then the surah in which Aal-e-Imran is mentioned. A’mash said: Then I met Ibrahim and informed him of this matter, so he criticized it and then said that Abdur Rahman bin Yazid narrated to me that he was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them both), and they came to Jamrah Aqabah and, standing in the valley with the Jamrah in front of them, threw seven pebbles at it from behind the stream, saying “Allahu Akbar” with each pebble. (The narrator) said: I said to him, “O Abu Abdur Rahman!” (this is the kunyah of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with them both), “People throw pebbles while standing above.” He replied, “By Him besides whom there is no deity, this is the place where Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed (i.e., the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, threw pebbles from here).”
