Hadith 701

‘Urwah says: I said to Umm al-Mu’minin ‘A’ishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) that if I do not perform the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, I think there is no harm. She asked: Why? ‘Urwah said: Because Allah Almighty says: “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj or ‘Umrah to the House, there is no blame upon him for walking between them.” { البقرہ : 158 } Umm al-Mu’minin (may Allah be pleased with her) said: If that were the case, Allah Almighty would have said: If anyone does not perform the Tawaf, there is no blame. And this verse was revealed about the people of the Ansar, for when they used to recite the Talbiyah in the time of ignorance, they would do so in the name of Manat and say: It is not right for us to perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. Then when they came for Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they mentioned this matter, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse. So, by my life, the Hajj of the one who does not perform the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah will not be complete. In another narration, Umm al-Mu’minin ‘A’ishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: No one’s Hajj or ‘Umrah is complete until he performs the Tawaf (i.e., Sa’i) between Safa and Marwah.
