Hadith 696

‘Abdullah bin Sarjis says: I saw the bald one (that is, the one who has no hair on his head, meaning Sayyiduna ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him), and he was kissing the Black Stone while saying: “By Allah, I am kissing you and I know that you are a stone, you can neither harm nor benefit. And if I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kissing you, I would never have kissed you.” (From this statement, the idolaters, grave-worshippers, and those who seek intercession from graves are refuted, who kiss graves and such things thinking they will fulfill their wishes, because even the kissing of the Black Stone, which is the right hand of Allah, is only due to following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), not because it can harm or benefit. So how can it be permissible to kiss other things, for which kissing is not established, rather it is prohibited, and that too with such impure beliefs?)
