Hadith 688

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ma’qil says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque. I asked him about this verse: (So its compensation is fasting or charity or sacrifice) __QUR_N__. Sayyiduna Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This was revealed about me. (Then he narrated the whole incident that) I had pain in my head, so I was taken to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in such a condition that lice were falling from my head onto my face. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I did not even imagine that you would be in so much pain. Well! Do you have a goat? I said: No. Then this verse was revealed: (So its compensation is fasting or charity or sacrifice) __QUR_N__ (i.e., during Hajj, do not shave your head while in the state of Ihram until you have offered a sacrifice, but if someone has pain in his head, he may shave his head, but he must pay a penalty: either fast, give charity, or offer a sacrifice). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Either you will have to fast for three days, or feed six needy people, or give half a sa’ (i.e., about one and a quarter kilograms of food) of wheat or the like to each of six needy people. And (Ka’b, may Allah be pleased with him) said: This verse, in terms of its revelation, is specific to me, but in terms of practice, it is general for all people.
