Hadith 671

´Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) says that` I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he had made his camels kneel on the stony ground of Makkah (that is, he had encamped there). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, "With what intention have you put on Ihram?" I replied, "With the same intention as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has put on Ihram." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Have you brought a sacrificial animal with you?" I said, "No." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Perform the Tawaf of the House of Allah and the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, then come out of Ihram." So I performed the Tawaf of the House of Allah and the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, then I went to a woman from my people (she was my mahram), and she combed my hair and washed my head. Then, during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), I began giving people the same fatwa (that is, whoever comes for Hajj without a sacrificial animal should come out of Ihram after performing Umrah, then on the Day of Tarwiyah, the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah, put on Ihram again for Hajj). But once, while I was standing at the place of Hajj, suddenly a man came and said, "(You give the fatwa to come out of Ihram), do you know that the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), has started a new practice regarding the sacrificial animal?" (That is, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that after performing Umrah, one should not come out of Ihram.) So I said, "O people! Whoever we have given this fatwa to, he should stop. Because the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), is coming, so follow him." When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, I said, "O Commander of the Faithful, what is this new ruling you have given regarding the sacrificial animal?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "If you act upon the Book of Allah, the Qur'an says: ((Wa atimmu al-hajja wal-umrata lillah)) — that is, complete Hajj and Umrah for Allah (meaning, do not come out of Ihram), and if you act upon the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his own practice was that he did not come out of Ihram until he had offered the sacrifice."
