Hadith 670

Musa bin Nafi’ says: I came to Makkah four days before the Day of Tarwiyah with the intention of benefiting from Hajj along with ‘Umrah (Hajj Tamattu’), so people said to me, “Your Hajj is like the Hajj of the people of Makkah.” Then I went to ‘Ata bin Abi Rabah and asked him about the issue, so ‘Ata said: Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me that he performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year when he had the sacrificial animal with him (i.e., in the Farewell Hajj, because after migration, the Prophet performed only one Hajj), and some people had assumed Ihram only for Hajj Mufrad. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Open your Ihram, perform Tawaf of the House (Ka’bah), perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, shorten your hair, and become lawful (i.e., come out of Ihram), until when the Day of Tarwiyah comes (i.e., 8th Dhul-Hijjah), then proclaim the Talbiyah for Hajj, and make the Ihram you brought with you as Hajj Tamattu’ (i.e., even if it was Ihram for Hajj, perform ‘Umrah, come out of Ihram, and then perform Hajj, so it will become Hajj Tamattu’).” The people said, “How can we make it Tamattu’ when we have named it Hajj?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do as I command you. For if I had not brought the sacrificial animal with me, I would have done as I am commanding you, but my Ihram cannot be opened until the sacrifice reaches its place (i.e., the place of slaughter).” Then the people did as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded.
