‘Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that’ the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed i’tikaf in the first ten days of Ramadan, then he performed i’tikaf in the middle ten days in a Turkish tent, at the door of which a mat was hanging. (At the beginning of the last ten days) (Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the mat with his blessed hand and moved it to one corner of the tent, and he put his head out and addressed the people, so the people came close to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I performed i’tikaf in the first ten days seeking (Laylat al-Qadr), then I performed i’tikaf in the middle ten days, then someone (an angel) came to me and it was revealed to me that this night (Laylat al-Qadr) is in the last ten nights. Whoever among you wishes to perform i’tikaf should do so. So the people performed i’tikaf with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was shown that it is in the odd nights, and I saw myself prostrating in the morning of that night in water and mud. Then, when the morning of the twenty-first night came, and that night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept praying until morning, and it rained, so the mosque leaked and I saw water and mud. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out after praying the morning prayer, there was a mark of water and mud on his forehead and the tip of his nose, and that was the twenty-first night of the last ten nights of Ramadan.
