Hadith 601

Qaza’ah says: I came to Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and there was a crowd of people around him. When the crowd dispersed, I said to him, “I do not ask you about what these people were asking;” and I asked him about fasting during travel. He said: We traveled to Makkah with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and we were fasting. Then we stopped at a certain place and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You are now close to your enemy, and breaking the fast will give you more strength. So, permission was given to not fast.” Some of us fasted and some of us did not. Then we stopped at another place and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Tomorrow morning you will meet your enemy, and breaking the fast will give you more strength. So all of you should break your fast.” His statement this time was a definite command, so all of us broke our fast. After that (i.e., after confronting the enemy), we looked at our army and saw that we used to fast during travel with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
