Hadith 595

´Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that` the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade continuous fasting (wisal), so a man said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You yourself observe wisal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Which one of you is like me? I spend the night while my Lord feeds me and gives me drink." Yet the people did not refrain from wisal (this was due to the perfect love and obedience of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, and they understood this prohibition as being out of compassion), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed wisal with them for one day, then for another day (he also observed wisal), then they saw the moon. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If the moon had not appeared, I would have continued wisal for longer." (And the Prophet's saying this was by way of reprimand and rebuke, when they did not refrain from wisal.)
