Hadith 592

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey in the month of Ramadan. When the sun had set, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O so-and-so! Dismount and mix sattu (barley drink) for us." He said, "O Messenger of Allah! It is still daytime." (That is, this companion thought that when the redness after sunset disappears and night comes, then it is time, although this is incorrect.) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said, "Dismount (from the camel) and mix sattu for us." Then he dismounted, mixed sattu, and brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who drank it. Then he gestured with his hand and said, "When the sun sets on this side (i.e., in the west) and night comes from this side (i.e., from the east), the fasting person should break his fast."
