Mukhtasar Muslim

Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were commanded to give charity, and we used to carry loads (to earn for it). Sayyiduna Abu Aqil (may Allah be pleased with him) gave half a sa’ in charity (i.e., about one and a quarter seer), and another person gave more than that. So the hypocrites began to say: Allah has no need of this one’s charity, and the other has only given charity to show off. Then this verse was revealed: “Those who criticize the believers who give charity willingly, and those who find nothing to give except their effort (wages)…”
