Hadith 528

Lady Zainab, the wife of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O assembly of women! Give charity, even if it is from your jewelry.” She said: Then I came to my husband, Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them), and I said, “You are a poor, empty-handed man, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has said that we should give charity. So go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him: If I give it to you and the charity is fulfilled, then good; otherwise, I will give it to someone else.” Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “You go yourself and ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).” Then I went, and an Ansari woman was standing at the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); her purpose was the same as mine. And the awe of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was very great. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came out, so we said, “Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him that two women are at the door asking: If they give charity to their husbands and to the orphans whom they support, will it be accepted as charity or not? And do not tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who we are.” Lady Zainab said: Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went and asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said, “Who are they?” Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, “One is a woman from the Ansar and the other is Zainab.” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Which Zainab?” He said, “The wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him).” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), “They will have a double reward in this: one for maintaining ties of kinship and the other for giving charity.”
