Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent some gold from Yemen to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), wrapped in a leather bag that had been tanned with acacia bark, and the gold had not yet been separated from the dust. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it among four men: ‘Uyainah bin Hisn, Aqra’ bin Habis, Zayd (known as) Khayl, and the fourth was either ‘Alqamah or ‘Amir bin Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with them). One of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “We are more deserving of this wealth than these people.” When this news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said, “Do you not trust me, even though I am the trustee of the One who is above the heavens, and news from the heavens comes to me morning and evening?”
Then he says that a man stood up whose eyes were deep-set, whose cheekbones were prominent, with a protruding forehead, thick beard, shaved head, and his lower garment was raised high. He stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Fear Allah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Woe to you! Am I not the most God-fearing among all the people of the earth?” The narrator says that then the man went away. Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not strike his neck?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No, perhaps he prays.” (It is understood that he was not often present in the blessed service, otherwise such an act would not have occurred.) Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Many who pray are such (hypocrites) that they say with their tongues what is not in their hearts.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Allah has not commanded me to cut open people’s hearts, nor to split open their bellies.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards him as he was walking away and said, “From the progeny of this man will come people who will recite the Qur’an beautifully, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the religion as an arrow passes through the prey.” (The narrator says) I think the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said, “If I find that group, I will kill them as the people of Thamud were killed.”
