Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to collect zakat. Then it was reported to him that Ibn Jameel, Khalid bin Walid, and (the uncle of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), these people had not given zakat. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: As for Ibn Jameel, he is only withholding it because he was poor and Allah made him wealthy. And as for Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him), you are being unjust to him, for he has dedicated his armors and weapons in the way of Allah (meaning, why would he not give zakat?). And as for Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), his zakat and an equal amount more is upon me (i.e., I am responsible for it). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)! Do you not know that an uncle is like a father?
