Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: A funeral passed by and the people spoke well of it, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory," three times he said this. Then another funeral passed by and the people spoke ill of it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory," three times he said this. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted, "May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! A funeral passed by and the people spoke well of it, and you said three times, 'It has become obligatory.' Then another passed by and the people spoke ill of it, and you said three times, 'It has become obligatory.' What does this mean (what has become obligatory)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "For the one whom you spoke well of, Paradise has become obligatory, and for the one whom you spoke ill of, Hell has become obligatory. You are Allah’s witnesses on earth, you are Allah’s witnesses on earth, you are Allah’s witnesses on earth."
