Hadith 462

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Sa‘d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit him, and ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf, Sa‘d, and ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them) were with him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him, he found him unconscious, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Has he passed away?” The people replied, “No.” Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to weep. When the people saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping, they all began to weep. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Listen, Allah does not punish for the tears of the eyes or the grief of the heart, but He punishes or shows mercy because of this”—and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his tongue—“that is, if a good word comes out of it, He shows mercy, and if an evil word comes out of it, He punishes.”
