Hadith 459

Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by a woman who was weeping over her (deceased) child. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Fear Allah and be patient. The woman replied: What do you know of my calamity? When the Prophet (peace be upon him) left, it was said to the woman: Indeed, that was the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Then grief struck her like death. So the woman came to the door of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and found no doorkeeper at his door. She said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I did not recognize you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, patience is at the first stroke of calamity. (The narrator is in doubt whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) said "at the first stroke of calamity" or "at the very first stroke of calamity.")
