`Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that` we fought in jihad with a tribe of Banu Juhainah in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). They fought us very fiercely. Then, when we had performed the Zuhr prayer, the polytheists said, "If only we launched a sudden attack on them, we would cut them down." Jibreel informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of this, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned it to us. And he said that the polytheists (also) said, "They have another prayer coming which is dearer to them than their children." Then, when the time for Asr came, we formed two rows (one behind the other), and the polytheists were facing the Qiblah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the opening Takbeer, and we all said it as well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed in Ruku', so we also bowed (i.e., both rows participated up to Ruku'), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people of the first row performed the prostration (Sajdah). Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) and the first row stood up, the second row performed the prostration, and the front row moved to the back and the back row came forward. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said Allahu Akbar, and we also said it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed in Ruku', so we also bowed, and the people of the first row performed the prostration with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people of the second row remained standing as they were. Then, when the others had also performed the prostration, all sat down. And all of us said the Salam with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu az-Zubair said that Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) also said another thing: "Just as your rulers nowadays perform the prayer."
