Hadith 308

Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up (for prayer), and we heard him saying, “I seek refuge with Allah from you.” Then he said, “I curse you as Allah has cursed you,” (he said this three times), and he extended his hand as if taking something. When he finished the prayer, we said, “O Messenger of Allah! Today in the prayer we heard you say things we had never heard before, and we also saw you extend your hand.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The enemy of Allah, Iblis, came with a flame of fire to burn my face. I said three times, ‘I seek refuge with Allah from you.’ Then I said, ‘I curse you as Allah has cursed you, a complete curse.’ He did not retreat after the three times, so I wanted to seize him. By Allah, if it were not for the supplication of our brother Sulaiman (peace be upon him), he would have remained tied up till morning, and the children of Madinah would have played with him.”
