´Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that` the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the call for prayer (iqamah) is made, do not stand up until you see me. (Do not stand before the imam arrives.) Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) facing Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen months, until this verse was revealed in Surah al-Baqarah: "Wherever you are, turn your face towards the Ka'bah" (al-Baqarah: 144). So this verse was revealed after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had already performed the prayer. One of his companions, upon hearing this, went out and found some people from the Ansar (as usual) praying towards Bayt al-Maqdis. He narrated this hadith to them (that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had been commanded to face the Ka'bah). Upon hearing this, they turned themselves towards the Ka'bah while still in prayer.
