Hadith 263

´Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: When the takbir for the obligatory prayer is pronounced, then there is no (other) prayer except that obligatory prayer. Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I offered prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) facing Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen months, until this verse was revealed in Surah al-Baqarah: “Wherever you are, turn your faces towards the Ka‘bah” (al-Baqarah: 144). So this verse was revealed after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had already performed the prayer. One of his companions, upon hearing this, went out and found some people from the Ansar (as usual) praying towards Bayt al-Maqdis. He narrated this hadith to them (that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had been commanded to face the Ka‘bah). Upon hearing this, they turned themselves towards the Ka‘bah while still in prayer.
