Hadith 2173

`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)` regarding Allah Almighty’s statement, “Do not move your tongue with it to hasten to remember it,” says that the incident is that at the time of the revelation of the Noble Qur’an, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would feel difficulty, so he would move his lips. Sa‘id said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to me, “I move my lips for you as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to move his lips.” So Sa‘id said, “Just as Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas was moving his lips, I also move my lips in the same way.” Then Allah Almighty revealed this command: “Do not move your tongue to hasten to remember it. Indeed, upon Us is its collection and its recitation,” meaning, to gather it in your (peace and blessings be upon him) chest, so that you (peace and blessings be upon him) may recite it. (That is, at the time of the revelation of the revelation) you should listen silently and attentively, then its recitation is Our responsibility. After this divine command, when Jibril would bring the revelation, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would listen to his words in silence, and after his departure, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would repeat the same words that Jibril (peace be upon him) had said.
