‘Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a field, and he was leaning on a stick, when he passed by a group of Jews. One of them said to another, “Ask him about the soul.” The other said, “What doubt do you have that you want to ask? Perhaps he will say something that you will dislike.” Then they said, “Ask.” So some of them got up and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about the soul. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and did not answer. I thought that revelation was coming to him. He says: I remained standing in that place. When the revelation had been sent down, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: “They ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is of the command of my Lord, and you have not been given knowledge except a little.”
