Hadith 2115

Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a way different from the way the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had taught me. I was about to seize him quickly, but I gave him respite until he finished reciting. Then I took his cloak, put it around his neck, and dragged him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I heard him reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a manner different from the way you taught me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Let him go," and told him, "Recite." He recited as I had heard him before, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This Surah was revealed in this way." Then he said to me, "Recite." So I recited (in the way the Messenger of Allah had taught me), and he also said, "It was revealed in this way." And he said, "The Qur'an has been revealed in seven modes, so recite in whichever is easy for you."
