Narrated from Nawwas bin Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the Dajjal one morning, sometimes minimizing and sometimes magnifying (i.e., sometimes belittling him and sometimes describing the greatness of his trial, or sometimes speaking loudly and sometimes softly), until we thought that the Dajjal was in the cluster of date palms. Then, when we went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the evening, he noticed the effect (i.e., fear and terror) on our faces. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What is your condition?" We said, "O Messenger of Allah! You mentioned the Dajjal and minimized and magnified him, until we thought that the Dajjal is present among those date palms (i.e., his coming is very near)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Other things besides the Dajjal are more fearful for me for you (i.e., trials and internal conflicts). If the Dajjal comes out while I am among you, then I will be his opponent before you (I will fight him) and will protect you from his evil. And if he comes out and I am not among you, then every man (Muslim) should fight him on his own behalf, and Allah will be my successor and guardian over every Muslim. As for the Dajjal, he is a young man with curly hair, his eye is protruding, as if I liken him to 'Abd al-'Uzza bin Qatan. So whoever among you encounters the Dajjal, he should recite the opening verses of Surah Al-Kahf over him. Surely, he will emerge from the road between Syria and Iraq and will spread corruption to his right and left. O servants of Allah! Remain firm upon faith." The Companions said, "O Messenger of Allah! How long will he remain on the earth?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Forty days, one day will be like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest of the days will be like your (normal) days." The Companions said, "O Messenger of Allah! The day which will be like a year, will the prayers of one day suffice for us on that day?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "No, you must estimate (the prayers for that year)." The Companions said, "O Messenger of Allah! How will his movement on the earth be?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Like a cloud driven by the wind from behind. He will come to a people and invite them, and they will believe in him and accept his word. Then he will command the sky, and it will rain, and he will command the earth, and it will produce grass and grain. In the evening, their animals will return with their humps higher than before, their udders full, and their flanks stretched (i.e., very fat). Then the Dajjal will come to another people and invite them, but they will not accept his word. So he will turn away from them, and they will be afflicted with drought and famine, and nothing will remain in their hands of their wealth. The Dajjal will pass by a ruined land and say, 'O earth! Bring forth your treasures,' and its wealth and treasures will come out and gather before him like bees swarm around their queen. Then the Dajjal will call a young man and strike him with a sword, cutting him into two pieces as a target is split, then he will revive him and call him, and the young man will come forward with a radiant face, laughing. While the Dajjal is in this state, suddenly Allah will send down 'Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon them). 'Isa (peace be upon him) will descend at the white minaret in the east of Damascus, wearing two yellow garments, with his hands resting on the wings of two angels. When 'Isa (peace be upon him) lowers his head, drops of sweat will fall, and when he raises his head, drops like pearls will fall. Every disbeliever who smells the fragrance of 'Isa's breath will die, and his breath will reach as far as his gaze. Then 'Isa (peace be upon him) will search for the Dajjal until he finds him at the gate of Ludd (a mountain in Syria) and will kill him there. Then those whom Allah has protected from the evil of the Dajjal will come to 'Isa (peace be upon him), and he will gently wipe their faces and inform them of their ranks in Paradise. While they are in this state, Allah will reveal to 'Isa (peace be upon him) that 'I have brought forth such servants of Mine that no one has the power to fight them; take My believing servants to the mountain of Tur for refuge.' And Allah will send forth Gog and Magog, and they will descend from every height. The first of them will pass by the lake of Tabariyyah and drink all its water. Then the last of them, when they pass by, will say, 'There was once water here.' (Then they will proceed until they reach the mountain with many trees, i.e., the mountain of Bayt al-Maqdis, and they will say, 'We have killed the inhabitants of the earth, now let us kill the inhabitants of the sky,' so they will shoot their arrows towards the sky. Allah will return their arrows stained with blood, and they will think they have killed the people of the sky. (This part is not in this narration but is taken from the following narration.) And the Prophet of Allah, 'Isa (peace be upon him), and his companions will remain besieged until the head of an ox will be more valuable to them than a hundred gold coins today (i.e., there will be extreme scarcity of food). Then the Prophet of Allah, 'Isa (peace be upon him), and his companions will supplicate, and Allah will send a worm into the necks of Gog and Magog, and by morning they will all die as one man dies. Then the Messenger of Allah, 'Isa (peace be upon him), and his companions will descend to the earth and will not find a handspan of space free from their stench and filth (i.e., their decaying corpses will cover the entire earth). Then the Messenger of Allah, 'Isa (peace be upon him), and his companions will supplicate to Allah, and Allah will send birds with necks like camels, which will carry them away and throw them wherever Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain such that the earth will be ordered to produce its fruits and restore its blessings. On that day, a group will eat from a single pomegranate and will sit in its shade, using its peel as a shelter. There will be blessings in milk, so much so that a milch camel will suffice for a large group of people, a milch cow for a tribe, and a milch goat for a whole family. While people are in this state, suddenly Allah will send a pure wind, which will touch them under their armpits and take effect, so the soul of every believer and Muslim will be taken, and only the worst of people will remain, who will openly commit intercourse like donkeys, and upon them the Hour will be established.
