´Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that` Allah Almighty will say to the person who will have the lightest punishment in Hell, "If you had the world and whatever is in it, would you give it to free yourself from the punishment?" He will say, "Yes." Allah Almighty will say, "I had asked you for something much easier than this (which required no expenditure) when you were in the loins of Adam (peace be upon him): that you should not commit shirk (associate partners with Allah), and I would not put you in Hell. But you did not accept and committed shirk." (God forbid, shirk is such a sin that it will not be forgiven, and if a person dies in the state of shirk, he will remain in Hell forever.)
