Sayyiduna Abu Tufail says that there was a dispute between a man from the people of Aqabah and Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him), as happens among people. He said, "I ask you by Allah, how many were the Companions of Aqabah?" (By this is meant those hypocrites who, during the expedition of Tabuk, gathered in a mountain pass to harm the Prophet ﷺ, but Allah protected him from their evil.) The people said to Hudhaifah, "When he is asking, then tell him." He said, "We were informed (by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ) that they were fourteen men. If you are also among them, then they were fifteen. And I swear that twelve of them were enemies of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ in this world and the Hereafter, and the remaining three made this excuse (when they were questioned and reproached): 'We did not even hear the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (who said not to come by the way of Aqabah), nor were we aware of the intention of this group.' And (at that time) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a rocky land. Then he moved on and said, '(At the next stop) there is little water, so no one should go to the water before me.' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived there, some (hypocrites) had already reached there, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed them that day."
