Hadith 1938

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which the people suffered greatly (from hunger and thirst). Abdullah bin Ubayy (the hypocrite) said to his fellow hypocrites, "Do not give anything to those who are with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until they disperse from him." Zuhayr said: This is the recitation of the one who recited "man hawlahu" (and this is the well-known recitation, and the rare recitation is "man hawlahu," meaning: until those who are around him disperse). And Abdullah bin Ubayy the hypocrite said, "If we return to Madinah, surely the honorable one (i.e., the accursed one considered himself honorable) will expel the lowly one" (i.e., the accursed one considered the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as the lowly one). When I heard this, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, so he sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and asked him about it. He swore that he had not said so and claimed that Zayd had lied to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This caused me great distress, until Allah proved me truthful and the Surah (When the hypocrites come to you) was revealed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called them to seek forgiveness, but they turned their heads away (i.e., they did not come), and Allah Almighty said about them: "As if they were pieces of wood propped up against a wall." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Those people appeared outwardly to be good and virtuous.
