Hadith 1917

Sayyiduna Harith bin Suwaid says that Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him) was ill, so I went to visit him. He narrated two hadiths to me: one from himself and one from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Verily, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His believing servant than a person who is on his riding animal, upon which are his food and drink, and he goes into a deadly, deserted wilderness (where there is neither shade nor water), and he lies down (to rest). When he wakes up, his riding animal has gone somewhere. Then he searches for it until he becomes extremely thirsty. Then (in despair) he says: I will return to the place where I was and lie down and die (because he sees no way of survival). Then he places his head on his arm and lies down to die. Then when he wakes up, he finds his riding animal with him, and on it is his provision—food and water. Allah is far more pleased with the repentance of His believing servant than this person is at finding his camel and provision.
