Hadith 1753

Abu Nofal says: I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) at the pass of Madinah (that is, the pass of Makkah which is on the way to Madinah). He says that the people of Quraysh would pass by him and other people as well (Hajjaj had crucified him and left him there), until Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) also passed by him. He stood there and said: "Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubaib!" (Abu Khubaib is the kunyah of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair, and Abu Bakr and Abu Bukair are also his kunyahs). "Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubaib! Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubaib!" (From this it is understood that saying salam to the deceased three times is recommended). "By Allah, I used to forbid you from this. By Allah, I used to forbid you from this. By Allah, I used to forbid you from this." (That is, from taking up the caliphate and government). "By Allah, as far as I know, you were one who fasted, prayed at night, and maintained ties of kinship. By Allah, the group of which you are considered bad is indeed an excellent group." (He said this in irony, meaning it is actually a bad group, and in another narration it is clearly stated that it is a bad group). Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) left from there. Then the news of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) standing there and speaking reached Hajjaj, so he had him taken down from the cross and thrown into the Jewish cemetery. (And Hajjaj did not understand what difference this would make. Wherever a person falls, it is necessary that his deeds are good).

Then Hajjaj sent for his mother, Sayyidah Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), but she refused to come to Hajjaj. Hajjaj sent again and said: "If you wish, come; otherwise, I will send someone who will grab you by your hair and drag you here." She still refused to come and said: "By Allah, I will not come to you unless you send the one who will drag me by my hair to you." Finally, Hajjaj said: "Bring me my shoes," and putting on his shoes arrogantly, he went until he reached Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "Have you seen what I have done to the enemy of Allah?" (This Hajjaj said according to his own belief about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair, whereas he himself was the enemy of Allah). Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I have seen that you have ruined Abdullah bin Zubair's worldly life, and he has ruined your Hereafter. I have heard that you used to call Abdullah bin Zubair 'the son of the woman with two belts'? By Allah, I am indeed the woman with two belts. With one belt, I used to carry food for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) so that animals would not eat it, and the other belt was what a woman needs." (Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) had torn her belt into two pieces: with one she tied her waist, and with the other she made a spread for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). This was the virtue of Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her), which Hajjaj considered a fault and used to call Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair 'the son of the woman with two belts' to humiliate him).

"So beware, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that in Thaqif there would arise a great liar and a great oppressor. We have seen the liar, and as for the oppressor, I do not consider anyone but you." Hearing this, Hajjaj stood up and gave no reply to Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her).
