Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A time will come upon the people when groups of men will go out for jihad, and they will be asked: 'Is there anyone among you who has seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?' They will reply: 'Yes!' So they will be granted victory. Then groups of people will go out for jihad, and they will be asked: 'Is there anyone among you who has seen a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?' (i.e., is there anyone among the Tabi'in?) The people will say: 'Yes!' Then they will be granted victory. Then armies of men will go out for jihad, and they will be asked: 'Is there anyone among you who has seen someone who saw a companion?' (i.e., among the Tabi' Tabi'in?) The people will say: 'Yes.' Then groups of people will go out for jihad, and they will be asked: 'Is there anyone among you who has seen the followers of the followers?'"
