Hadith 172

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that (the daughter of Shakl or the daughter of Yazid bin Sakan) Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the ritual bath (ghusl) after menstruation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: First, take water with lotus leaves and purify yourself well with it (i.e., wash and clean the menstrual blood that is present), then pour water over your head and rub vigorously so that the water reaches the roots of the hair. Then pour water over yourself (i.e., over the whole body). Then take a piece of cotton or cloth scented with musk and purify yourself with it. Lady Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: How should I purify myself with it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Subhan Allah! Purify yourself with it.” Then Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) quietly said: Apply it to the place of blood. Then she asked about the ritual bath after sexual impurity (janabah), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take water and purify yourself well, then pour water over your head and rub so that the water reaches all the roots, then pour water over your whole body. Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: How excellent were the women of the Ansar, they did not feel shy to ask about matters of religion. (And this is necessary, because modesty is in sin and disobedience, and asking about religious matters is reward and merit.)
